Some tests may stump you for long enough to hunt for a solution online, but most of the game can be puzzled through if you work on it long enough. The Portal games are fun, challenging and compelling with a story, lore and characters that keep players coming back for more. The simple fact that Valve so heavily stress-tested these games that people have hunted for ways to get trapped within the game and continually fail to do so is proof of their quality. While Chell (the vehicle for the player) never says anything, the others (GLaDOS in both games and Weatley in the second) carry the dialogue, something they do with aplomb. Then, there are the characters that populate this world, from the silent protagonist Chell to the humorously murderous GLaDOS and the incompetent but companionable Wheatley. This is clear when you first see Aperture in ruins and later on when you learn just what happened in this place. From the sterile test chambers to the rusty and dusty areas behind the scenes to the spine-chilling rat dens, you truly feel like a rat in a maze. The music just reinforces that. The atmosphere perfectly encompasses the environment. They are linear in nature, but contain tests that can be solved in multiple ways. The Portal games are tight, compact games.
Portal isn't the only Valve game to famously stop at two, prompting some fans to joke that "Valve can't count to three." However, Half-Life, just received a new entry after 13 years with Half-Life: Alyx, but there's been no talk of a new Portal game. This may be disappointing to fans who would love to revisit this classic, but is a Portal sequel actually necessary? It’s no wonder people have been clamoring for Portal 3 ever since Portal 2 came out.
The unique gameplay, which requires puzzling out tests and staying one step ahead of the murderous AI that want to kill you, demonstrated the physics involved so well that these games have been used in schools to teach the subject. Portal's overwhelming success led to Portal 2, a smattering of spinoffs, a healthy dose of fan-games and guest appearances, a slot in a LEGO game and a heaping helping of fan content and mods.
